The read
Moicano's more complete, disciplined game gives him the edge in this one.
Ortega will always have a puncher's and a submission chance given his guard, and a scramble into a triangle or arm-triangle is a live path to victory.
But Moicano's technical boxing, output, and improved wrestling defense should let him control range and avoid the exact scrambles Ortega needs, pointing to a Moicano decision or a finish if he can hurt Ortega on the feet first.
The matchup
This is a craft-versus-craft rematch of a booking that never happened, now at a new weight.
Moicano is the sharper, more efficient striker with real submission power of his own, while Ortega brings elite scrambling and one of the best guards in the sport but arrives with real questions about his chin and title cutting to lightweight for the first time.
Ortega's extra size and strength at 155 could reinvigorate him, but Moicano has faced considerably tougher competition in recent years and rarely beats himself.

“Money Moicano”
Renato Moicano is a 37-year-old Brazilian lightweight and BJJ black belt who trains out of American Top Team, and a former title challenger who fell short against Islam Makhachev in January 2025. He rebounded with a decisive second-round submission win over Chris Duncan in April 2026 after a rough patch that included a decision loss to Beneil Dariush. Eleven of his 21 career wins have come by submission, giving him a finishing threat to go with a sharp, efficient boxing and leg-kick attack.

“T-City”
Brian 'T-City' Ortega is a 35-year-old BJJ black belt out of Black House MMA who has been one of the featherweight division's most feared submission threats for a decade, with 8 of his 16 wins coming by submission. He makes his lightweight debut at UFC 331 after repeated weight-cutting struggles at 145, most recently missing weight before a scheduled March 2026 meeting with Moicano fell through. His record also includes a no-contest not reflected in the win-loss total. He enters off back-to-back decision losses to Diego Lopes and Aljamain Sterling and is looking for the extra pound-and-a-half of room to reset his career.
