Significant strikes landed per minute, usually shown as SLpM, is exactly what it sounds like: the average number of significant strikes a fighter lands for every minute they spend in the cage, averaged across their whole UFC career. It's the single number that best answers "how much offense does this fighter actually produce," but reading it well means understanding what it counts and, just as importantly, what it doesn't.
Why per minute, and not per fight or per round
A fighter's career includes first-round knockouts that last 90 seconds and five-round decisions that go 25 minutes. Counting strikes per fight would make a high-volume fighter who gets finished early look unproductive, and counting strikes per round runs into the same problem whenever a fight ends mid-round.
Dividing total significant strikes by total time actually spent fighting removes that distortion. A fighter with a 5.5 SLpM average landed, on balance, five and a half significant strikes every minute they were in there — whether that came from a two-minute blowout or a 25-minute grind. It's a rate, not a raw total, which is what makes it possible to compare a finisher and a fighter who goes the distance every time on the same scale.
What actually counts toward it
SLpM is built entirely from significant strikes — strikes landed at a real fighting distance, plus the harder power strikes landed in a clinch or on the ground. Light, positional strikes thrown mainly for control while grappling don't count. That means a fighter who spends a lot of a fight in top control without landing much offense from there can post a lower SLpM than the strike count on a broadcast graphic might suggest, because plenty of that clinch and ground activity gets filtered out before the rate is calculated.
Reading the number: volume isn't the same as output quality
A high SLpM tells you a fighter lands a lot of strikes relative to time spent fighting. It does not tell you how hard those strikes landed, how accurate the fighter was, or whether the volume actually threatened to finish anyone. Two fighters with similar SLpM can have completely different profiles — a high-accuracy counter striker landing fewer but sharper shots per exchange, next to a high-output pressure fighter who accepts a lower accuracy percentage in exchange for constant volume. Pairing SLpM with striking accuracy tells you which kind of fighter you're actually looking at.
That gap shows up clearly on our fighter pages. Anthony Hernandez, a pressure grappler who spends much of his time working from top position and in exchanges, averages 4.57 significant strikes per minute at 61 percent accuracy. Gregory Rodrigues, a power striker who takes fewer, heavier swings, averages 5.53 SLpM at 52 percent accuracy. Both post real volume numbers, but the shape of that offense — accurate and controlled versus higher-output and heavier-handed — comes from reading SLpM next to accuracy, not from the rate alone.
SLpM's mirror stat: strikes absorbed per minute
The counterpart to SLpM is SApM, significant strikes absorbed per minute — the same calculation applied to what a fighter's opponents land on them. Looking at the two together gives a rough shape of how a fighter's fights tend to go: high SLpM with low SApM describes someone who dominates exchanges, while high numbers on both sides usually means a fighter who wins wars rather than avoids them. A fighter with modest SLpM and low SApM isn't necessarily unproductive — grappling-heavy fighters often keep both numbers down simply because a lot of their offense is landed in ways the significant-strikes count doesn't fully capture.
Where the average can mislead
SLpM is a career average, and averages smooth over real variation. A fighter's rate reflects every UFC fight they've had, weighted by time in the cage, which means a career built on a mix of blowouts and grinding decisions produces a single number that doesn't describe any individual performance particularly well. A fighter coming off an injury layoff, a weight-class move, or a change in gameplan can be striking very differently right now than their career SLpM suggests. Treat the number as a baseline for what a fighter has generally done, not a prediction of what they'll do in their next fight.
The stat also can't separate a fighter who controls the pace of a fight — landing steadily against an opponent who can't do much back — from one who's in constant high-volume exchanges with credible return fire. Both situations can produce similar SLpM numbers while describing very different fights.
Using it well
The most useful way to read SLpM is next to the rest of the stat line, not in isolation. Volume plus accuracy tells you how a fighter generates offense. Volume plus SApM tells you whether that offense tends to come one-way or in exchanges. On its own, SLpM answers one narrow question — how much does this fighter land, on average, per minute of fighting — and it's worth remembering that's all it answers.
The takeaway
SLpM measures rate of significant-strike output, normalized for time in the cage so fighters with different finish rates and fight lengths can be compared on the same scale — but it says nothing about accuracy, power, or what kind of fight produced the number. Read it alongside striking accuracy and strikes absorbed on a fighter's page rather than as a standalone measure of how good or dangerous a striker actually is.
