Two numbers on a UFC fighter's stat line describe how much punishment they take: striking defense, the percentage of an opponent's significant strike attempts that don't land, and significant strikes absorbed per minute (SApM), the rate at which strikes actually do land on them. They sound similar but measure different things — one is about avoidance, the other is about volume — and neither one tells you whether a fighter can take a punch.

What striking defense actually counts

Striking defense is a percentage built from significant strikes — strikes landed at real fighting distance, plus power strikes landed in a clinch or on the ground. Every time an opponent throws one of those strikes, it either lands or it doesn't. Divide the misses by the total attempts and you get a fighter's defense percentage: the share of an opponent's real offense that never connects.

The UFC-wide median sits in the mid-50s percent. A fighter above 60 percent is avoiding roughly three out of every five significant strikes thrown at them. A fighter in the high 40s or below is getting hit by more than half of what's thrown their way, at least by this measure.

Defense percentage says nothing about power or accuracy of the strikes it's counting. A jab that grazes past someone's chin and a looping right hand that would have ended the fight count exactly the same in this stat — both are just "missed."

What SApM actually counts

Significant strikes absorbed per minute is a rate, not a percentage. It's the average number of significant strikes a fighter's opponents land on them for every minute the fighter spends in the cage, across their career. A fighter with a career SApM of 3.0 has absorbed, on balance, three significant strikes for every minute they've fought in the UFC.

Because it's a rate, SApM lets you compare fighters who've had very different careers — someone who's mostly finished opponents early and someone who's gone the distance repeatedly — on the same scale. It also means SApM is sensitive to pace. A fighter who fights in short, explosive bursts and a fighter who fights at a slow, controlled pace can post similar SApM numbers while having completely different fights, because the stat only tracks what lands relative to time, not what kind of fight produced it.

Why the two numbers can disagree

Striking defense and SApM usually move together — a fighter who avoids a high share of strikes generally also absorbs fewer per minute — but they can pull apart, and when they do, it tells you something real about how a fighter operates.

A fighter who fights at a low pace, avoids exchanges, and controls where the fight happens can post a very low SApM without having elite striking defense, simply because opponents don't get many clean looks to throw at them in the first place. Islam Makhachev's page is a clear example: he absorbs 1.45 significant strikes per minute, a strikingly low number, largely because his fights are built around wrestling and top control rather than standing exchanges. His striking defense percentage is solid but not dramatically higher than the UFC median — the low SApM comes more from limiting how often he's in a striking exchange at all than from slipping punches at an exceptional rate once he's in one.

Compare that to a fighter who fights mostly at range, in constant exchanges, and accepts return fire as the cost of pressing forward. That kind of fighter can have a perfectly ordinary defense percentage but a much higher SApM, simply because they're in far more exchanges over the course of a fight. Neither profile is better or worse — they describe different ways of managing risk, and reading SApM next to defense percentage is how you tell which one you're looking at.

Neither number measures a chin

"Durability" in casual conversation usually means something closer to "can this fighter take a big shot and keep going" — commentators call it having a good or bad chin. Striking defense and SApM don't measure that directly. Both are counting stats: how much gets thrown, how much lands, how much is avoided. Neither one weighs how hard any individual strike landed or whether it visibly hurt the fighter who absorbed it.

A fighter can have a high SApM and a reputation for being hard to hurt, because they're built to absorb volume without much damage accumulating. A fighter can have a low SApM and still be considered fragile, because the few strikes that do land on them tend to end fights. The stats describe exposure — how much offense reaches a fighter — not the outcome of that exposure once it lands.

That gap matters most when a fighter's SApM looks alarming in isolation. A high number paired with a long, durable career and few finish losses tells a very different story than the same number paired with a history of getting stopped. Reading SApM next to a fighter's finish profile — how many of their losses came by knockout versus decision — gets much closer to an actual durability read than the raw absorption rate does on its own.

Using the numbers together

The most useful read pairs all three: significant strikes landed per minute for output, striking defense for how much of an opponent's offense gets through, and SApM for how much actually lands over time. A fighter who's high on output and defense while staying low on SApM is dominating exchanges. A fighter who's high on all three is trading, often successfully, in wars. A fighter who's low across the board is likely controlling pace through grappling or distance management rather than either landing or absorbing much standing offense at all.
