Petersen is a Minnesota native who won two state wrestling titles and competed at the Division I level for North Dakota State before turning to MMA. He captured the LFA heavyweight championship and punched his UFC ticket on the 2023 Contender Series with a second-round keylock submission. His Octagon run has been streaky — grinding decision wins over Mohammed Usman and Don'Tale Mayes mixed with knockout losses to Shamil Gaziev and Vitor Petrino.
